Shopify CSV import errors
What each error in Shopify’s product import means, and how to fix your CSV so the import goes through.
- Validation failed: price can't be blankShopify couldn't import a variant because its Price cell is empty. Enter a price for that variant (use 0.00 if it's free), save the file as CSV UTF-8, and import it again. How to fix it
- Validation failed: options are not uniqueTwo variants of the same product have exactly the same option values, for example two rows that are both Size M and Color White. Change or remove one of the duplicate rows so every combination of option values is unique, then import again. How to fix it
- Ignored line #-## because handle example already existsShopify skipped the line because its URL handle was already used by an earlier product in the file. Keep all rows of a product together, one after another, and make sure two different products never share the same handle. How to fix it
- Ignored line #-## because it did not contain product dataShopify found rows with a URL handle but no product title, so it couldn't create the product. Add the title to the first row of that product and import again. How to fix it
- Invalid CSV header: missing headersShopify couldn't find one or more required columns in the first row of your file. Rename your column headers so they match Shopify's product CSV template exactly, including Title and URL handle, then import again. How to fix it
- Network error: Unexpected token < in JSON at position 0Although it looks like a network problem, Shopify shows this error when your CSV column headers don't exactly match its template. Headers are case-sensitive, so fix their spelling, capitalization and extra spaces, then import again. How to fix it
- Illegal quoting on lineThere's a quote character Shopify can't read on that line, either because it's in the wrong place or because the file isn't saved as UTF-8. Wrap values that contain quotes or commas in straight double quotes, double any quote inside a value, and save the file as CSV UTF-8.How to fix it
- Missing or stray quote on lineA quote mark on that line is unbalanced: a curly quote, a missing closing quote or an extra quote. Open the file in a text editor, replace curly quotes with straight quotes and make sure every quoted value opens and closes with a straight double quote. How to fix it
- Inventory quantity can't be blankThe variant tracks inventory, but its Inventory quantity is empty. Enter a whole number such as 0 or 12, or, if you don't track stock for this item, leave Inventory tracker blank instead. How to fix it
- Inventory quantity is not a numberThe Inventory quantity cell contains something other than a whole number, such as 12 pcs, 3.5 or N/A. Replace it with a whole number like 12 and import again. How to fix it
- Inventory policy is not included in the listThe column that controls selling when out of stock contains a value Shopify doesn't accept. Change it to deny to stop selling at zero stock, or continue to keep selling, then import again. How to fix it
- Fulfillment service can't be blankThe variant's Fulfillment service cell is empty. Enter manual if you fulfill orders yourself, or the handle of your fulfillment service if you use one, then import again. How to fix it
- Validation failed: getaddrinfo: nodename nor servname provided, or not knownOne of your image URLs isn't a complete, public web address. Make sure every Product image URL starts with https:// and points directly to an image file that anyone can open, then import again. How to fix it
- Not a valid product categoryThe Product category value doesn't match Shopify's Standard Product Taxonomy. Replace it with the full category breadcrumb or the category ID exactly as Shopify lists it, or leave the cell blank, then import again. How to fix it
- Validation failed: An error occurred while trying to download the imageShopify reached the image URL but couldn't get an image file from it, usually because the image was moved or deleted, the link needs a sign-in or has expired, or the server blocked the download. Open the URL in a private browser window, and if it doesn't show the image, replace it with a working public link. How to fix it
- Validation failed: The uploaded image exceeds the 20 megapixel limitOne of the images in your CSV has too many pixels for Shopify. Resize it so that width × height is 20 megapixels or less, for example 5000 × 4000 px, upload the smaller version and import again. How to fix it
- Incorrect header checkShopify couldn't read the data it downloaded for an image on that line. Remove the image from that line and import again. If that works, host the image somewhere else, such as Shopify Files, and add it back. How to fix it
- Validation failed: Value must be a valid product referenceA metafield in your CSV refers to a product that isn't in your store yet. Import the products first without those metafield values, then add the values back and import again with “Overwrite products with matching handles” selected. How to fix it
- Line is invalid (No details)The file moves an existing option to a different position, for example Size from Option1 to Option2, which conflicts with the product's current options. Import once with a temporary option name such as “Size.”, then import again to rename it back. How to fix it
- Daily variant creation limit reached, try againYour store has reached Shopify's daily limit for new variants. Stores with 500,000 or more variants, except Shopify Plus stores, can create up to 10,000 new variants in 24 hours by CSV or API. Wait for the 24-hour period to end, then import the rest in batches. How to fix it
