Fix “Not a valid product category” in a Shopify CSV import
The Product category value doesn't match Shopify's Standard Product Taxonomy. Replace it with the full category breadcrumb or the category ID exactly as Shopify lists it, or leave the cell blank, then import again.
Error message in Shopify
Not a valid product category
What this error means
Product category is a standardized classification, not free text. Shopify accepts either the full category breadcrumb, such as Home & Garden > Linens & Bedding > Bedding > Bed Sheets, or the category ID, such as hg-15-1-2, from its Standard Product Taxonomy. A partial path, a custom name or a small typo doesn't match and is rejected.
Common causes
- Only the last part of the category was entered, such as Shirts, instead of the full path.
- A custom category name was used. Your own groupings belong in Type or Tags instead.
- The path has a typo, different spacing or a different separator than Shopify's taxonomy.
How to fix it
- Open Shopify's taxonomy explorer at shopify.github.io/product-taxonomy and search for your product type.
- Copy the full category breadcrumb or the category ID exactly as shown.
- Paste it into the Product category column. Keep the “ > ” separators as they are.
- If you're not sure which category fits, leave the cell blank. You can set the category later in the Shopify admin.
- Save the file as CSV UTF-8 and import it again.
Example
URL handle,Title,Product category percale-sheet,Percale sheet,Bed Sheets
URL handle,Title,Product category percale-sheet,Percale sheet,Home & Garden > Linens & Bedding > Bedding > Bed Sheets
Bed Sheets is only the last level of the category. Shopify needs the full breadcrumb, or the ID hg-15-1-2.
How to prevent it
- Use Type or Tags for your own product groupings, and Product category only for Shopify's taxonomy values.
- Copy categories from a product export in your store instead of typing them.

Frequently asked questions
- Is Product category required?
- No. You can leave it blank. Shopify uses the category to calculate tax rates in the United States, so it's worth setting if you sell there.
- What's the difference between Product category and Type?
- Product category must come from Shopify's standard taxonomy. Type is free text that you define for your own organization.
