Fix “Invalid CSV header: missing headers” in a Shopify product import

Shopify couldn't find one or more required columns in the first row of your file. Rename your column headers so they match Shopify's product CSV template exactly, including Title and URL handle, then import again.

Error message in Shopify

Invalid CSV header: missing headers

What this error means

The first line of a product CSV is the header row, and Shopify matches columns by their exact names. If a required column such as Title or URL handle (Handle in older templates) is missing, or its name is spelled differently, Shopify can't read the file and stops the import.

Common causes

  • The file came from another platform that uses its own column names, such as Name instead of Title.
  • A required column was deleted while editing the file.
  • A header has an extra space, a typo or different wording than Shopify's template.

How to fix it

  1. Download Shopify's sample product CSV, or export one product from your store, to see the correct headers.
  2. Compare the first row of your file with the sample, column by column.
  3. Rename any column whose name doesn't match exactly, and add required columns that are missing.
  4. Remove spaces at the start or end of each header.
  5. Save the file as CSV UTF-8 and import it again.

Example

Before
Handle,Name,Price
wool-scarf,Wool scarf,24.90
After
URL handle,Title,Price
wool-scarf,Wool scarf,24.90

Name isn't a Shopify column. Renaming it to Title, and Handle to URL handle, matches the current template.

How to prevent it

  • Start new files from Shopify's template or a fresh export instead of building headers by hand.
  • Use a validator that compares every header with Shopify's current and legacy column names.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the older column names like Variant Price?
Shopify still accepts files in its older template, but keep all columns in one format. Mixing old and new names in one file can cause columns to be misread.
What is the “Choose column headings” window?
Shopify shows it when your headers don't match. You can map each column there, but fixing the headers in the file is more reliable for future imports.
