Fix “Line is invalid (No details)” in a Shopify CSV import

The file moves an existing option to a different position, for example Size from Option1 to Option2, which conflicts with the product's current options. Import once with a temporary option name such as “Size.”, then import again to rename it back.

Error message in Shopify

Line is invalid (No details)

What this error means

Shopify's help center explains that this error is usually caused by a conflict with existing variant options. When a CSV assigns an existing option to a new position, Shopify checks for duplicate option names before it imports the new values, finds the old one still in place, and the import fails without details.

Common causes

  • The option order was changed, for example Size moved from Option1 to Option2.
  • A new option was added in front of an existing one, pushing it to the next position.
  • Options were renamed so that an existing name ends up in another position.

How to fix it

  1. Find the product on the line in the error message and compare its option names with the product in your store.
  2. In your CSV, give the moved option a temporary name, for example Size. with a period at the end.
  3. Import the file with the temporary name.
  4. After the import succeeds, change the temporary name back, for example from Size. to Size, in a new CSV.
  5. Import the updated file to apply the final option name.

Example

Before
URL handle,Title,Option1 name,Option1 value,Option2 name,Option2 value
cotton-tee,Cotton tee,Type,Regular,Size,S
After
URL handle,Title,Option1 name,Option1 value,Option2 name,Option2 value
cotton-tee,Cotton tee,Type,Regular,Size.,S

Size moved from the first to the second option. Importing it as “Size.” avoids the conflict. A second import then renames it to Size.

How to prevent it

  • Avoid changing the order of options in a CSV. If you need to, plan the two-step import from the start.
  • Back up your products before changing options. Shopify warns that changing option values deletes existing variant IDs and creates new ones.

Skuvera can't detect this particular problem before import, but it checks your product CSV against Shopify's other rules in your browser, so you can fix everything else in one go. Free, no sign-up.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't Shopify show more details?
The conflict is found while Shopify checks option names against the existing product, before the new values are saved. The message only reports that the line is invalid.
Will my variants change?
They can. Changing data in the Option1, Option2 or Option3 value columns deletes existing variant IDs and creates new ones, which can affect apps that rely on variant IDs.
