Shopify overwrite import cleared product descriptions, compare-at prices or metafields

When you select “Overwrite products with matching handles”, every column in your file replaces the store's value, and an empty cell can count as a value. Restore the lost values from an export taken before the import, and next time fill those cells or remove the columns you don't mean to change.

起きること

  • Product descriptions are empty after the import.
  • Compare-at prices are gone, so sale prices no longer show a crossed-out original price.
  • Metafield values, such as a material or care field, have disappeared.
  • The vendor now shows your store name instead of the brand or supplier.
  • Shopify reported the import as successful, so nothing pointed to a problem.

原因

  • Shopify's documentation says that with overwrite selected, a blank non-required column overwrites the store's value as blank, while a column that isn't in the file at all leaves the store's value unchanged.
  • The file has the full set of columns but only some of them are filled in, for example a supplier sheet, a converted file or a price-update file built from a template. Every empty cell in an included column is applied to the store.
  • Based on our tests on a Shopify development store in November 2026, blank Description and Compare-at price cells cleared those fields, and a blank metafield column deleted the product's metafield value.
  • Not every blank behaves as the documentation's example suggests. Shopify's example says a blank Vendor is overwritten as blank, but in our tests the vendor became the store name. A blank SEO title kept the existing SEO title, and leaving every image URL of a product blank kept its images.
  • Some blanks are rejected rather than cleared. Shopify's column reference says an empty Price defaults to 0.00, but in our tests a blank price on an existing product made Shopify reject that product with “Validation failed: price can't be blank”. A Status column that's present but blank made Shopify reject the whole file, which matches the documentation's note that the column needs a value when it's present.
  • Shopify's column reference also says an empty Inventory quantity defaults to 0. Our tests didn't give a clear answer for overwrite imports, so treat blank inventory cells as a risk and check stock after importing.

修正方法

  1. Work out what changed. Shopify imports can't be canceled and there's no import history, but the store's activity log shows recent changes made by an import.
  2. Find the old values. The easiest source is a product export you took before the import. If you don't have one, Shopify can't restore the values for you; you'll need your own records, a supplier file or a backup app.
  3. Build a repair file from that export. Keep URL handle and Title (both are required when updating products) and only the columns that were cleared, such as Description, Vendor, Compare-at price or the metafield column. Columns you leave out stay as they are.
  4. If you keep a variant column such as Compare-at price, also keep Option1 name and Option1 value, with the values exactly as exported. Shopify warns that without them it deletes the existing variants and creates a new default variant, and changing an option value recreates the variant.
  5. Import the repair file with “Overwrite products with matching handles” selected, then spot-check a few products in the admin.
  6. Before your next overwrite import, compare a fresh store export with the new file in Skuvera's catalog diff. It runs in your browser and lists every cell that would be cleared, vendors that would become the store name and products Shopify would reject for a blank price. With Pro or the 7-day pass, you can also download a safe import file that fills those cells back with the store's current values.

URL handle,Title,Description,Vendor,Option1 name,Option1 value,Price,Compare-at price

The new file only meant to change the price, but it left Description, Vendor and Compare-at price empty. With overwrite selected, the description and compare-at price would be cleared and the vendor would become the store name. Filling them with the store's current values, or removing columns you don't want to change, keeps them.

予防方法

  • Export all products before every overwrite import and keep the file. Shopify recommends having a backup because imports can't be canceled.
  • Include only the columns you want to change, plus URL handle and Title. Add Option1 name and Option1 value whenever the file has variant columns.
  • Don't treat an empty cell as “no change”. If a value should stay, copy it from the store export.
  • Try large imports on a small subset or a development store first, as Shopify suggests for partners.
  • Compare the store export with the new file in a catalog diff before importing.

よくある質問

Can I undo an overwrite import?
No. Shopify doesn't keep a history of imports and can't roll one back. The only way back is to import the old values again, which is why an export taken before the import matters.
Will a blank SEO title clear my custom SEO title?
In our tests it didn't: the custom SEO title stayed. Shopify's documentation says that when the SEO title is blank, the product title is used in search results, and exports only fill the SEO columns for products where you customized them.
Will blank image columns delete my product images?
In our tests, a product whose image URL cells were all blank kept its images. Removing one image row from a product that still listed its other images did delete that image, so keep every image row you want to keep.
Does the safe import file protect everything?
No. It fills back fields that would be cleared, vendors that would become the store name and blank prices. It can't protect variants that would be deleted or recreated, or products that a Collection column would move; those are listed for you to check by hand. Blank inventory cells aren't filled back either, because Shopify's behavior there isn't confirmed.
