What a Shopify overwrite import changes in your existing products
Yes, it can change more than you meant. With “Overwrite products with matching handles” selected, each column in your file replaces your store's data, and an empty cell can wipe a value. Columns you leave out of the file stay as they are. Export your products first, keep only the columns you want to change, and compare the two files before you import.
Signs an overwrite import changed too much
- Descriptions, compare-at prices or metafields are empty.
- The vendor now shows your store name.
- Tags you added before are gone.
- A product is no longer in a collection it used to be in.
- Some variants show 0 in stock, or apps can't find them anymore.
- Shopify still said the import was successful.
How an overwrite import works
- An overwrite import is a product CSV import with “Overwrite products with matching handles” selected. It updates products that are already in your store.
- The URL handle is the product's unique name in its web address, such as linen-shirt. Shopify uses it to find the matching product.
- A variant is one version of a product, such as size M. Each variant has its own row in the CSV.
- For every matching product, each column in your file replaces the store's value. Shopify's documentation says a blank cell in a non-required column is written as blank.
- A column that isn't in your file at all leaves the store's value as it is.
- If you don't select overwrite, Shopify ignores products whose handle already exists and changes nothing.
What changes, case by case
Columns you leave out stay the same
Stays the sameIn your store now URL handle,Title,Description,Vendor linen-shirt,Linen shirt,Soft linen,Acme
In your import file URL handle,Title,Vendor linen-shirt,Linen shirt,Acme Linen
After the import: Only the vendor changes. The description stays, because the Description column isn't in the file. This is how Shopify's documentation describes it.
Blank cells clear the field
ChangesIn your store now URL handle,Title,Description linen-shirt,Linen shirt,Soft linen
In your import file URL handle,Title,Description linen-shirt,Linen shirt,
After the import: The description is cleared. In our tests on a Shopify development store in November 2026, blank Compare-at price and metafield cells were cleared too.
To avoid it: Fill the cell with the current value from your export, or remove the column.

A blank vendor becomes your store name
ChangesIn your store now URL handle,Title,Vendor linen-shirt,Linen shirt,Acme
In your import file URL handle,Title,Vendor linen-shirt,Linen shirt,
After the import: In our tests, the vendor became the store name. Shopify's documentation says it's overwritten as blank. Either way, the old vendor is lost.
To avoid it: Copy the vendor from your export, or remove the Vendor column.

Tags are replaced, not added
ChangesIn your store now URL handle,Title,Tags linen-shirt,Linen shirt,"summer, new"
In your import file URL handle,Title,Tags linen-shirt,Linen shirt, sale
After the import: The product's only tag is now “sale”. In our tests, Shopify replaced the whole list and didn't keep the old tags.
To avoid it: Put every tag you want in the cell, for example “summer, new, sale”.
Changing an option value recreates the variant
ChangesIn your store now URL handle,Title,Option1 name,Option1 value,SKU cotton-tee,Cotton tee,Size,M,TEE-M
In your import file URL handle,Title,Option1 name,Option1 value,SKU cotton-tee,Cotton tee,Size,Medium,TEE-M
After the import: Shopify deletes the M variant and creates a new one with a new ID, as its documentation warns. In our tests, the new variant had 0 in stock, even with the same SKU. Changing only capital letters, like m to M, did the same. A variant row missing from the file was deleted.
To avoid it: Copy option values exactly from your export, and keep every variant row. If you keep variant columns such as SKU or Price, keep Option1 name and Option1 value too.

A Collection column moves the product
ChangesIn your store now URL handle,Title,Collection linen-shirt,Linen shirt,Summer
In your import file URL handle,Title,Collection linen-shirt,Linen shirt,Sale
After the import: In our tests, the product was added to Sale and removed from the manual collection it was in before. Shopify's documentation says a CSV can add a product to only one collection. Product exports don't include this column, so the export can't show the old collection.
To avoid it: Leave the Collection column out unless you want to move products. Add products to collections in the admin instead.
Blank SEO title and image cells keep their values
Stays the sameIn your store now URL handle,Title,SEO title,Product image URL linen-shirt,Linen shirt,Linen shirt for summer,https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/linen.jpg
In your import file URL handle,Title,SEO title,Product image URL linen-shirt,Linen shirt,,
After the import: In our tests, the custom SEO title stayed and the product kept its images. A file without image columns also kept them. But removing one image row, while the product's other image rows were still in the file, deleted that image.
To avoid it: Keep every image row you want to keep.

A blank inventory quantity: not confirmed
Not confirmed yetIn your store now URL handle,Title,Option1 name,Option1 value,Inventory quantity cotton-tee,Cotton tee,Size,M,5
In your import file URL handle,Title,Option1 name,Option1 value,Inventory quantity cotton-tee,Cotton tee,Size,M,
After the import: We don't know yet. Shopify's column reference says a blank Inventory quantity defaults to 0. In our test store, the product CSV didn't change stock at all, so we couldn't confirm it. The column only applies to stores with one location.
To avoid it: Don't rely on the product CSV for stock. Check stock after importing, or use Shopify's inventory CSV.
How to import safely, step by step
- In your Shopify admin, export all products and keep the file. This is your backup.
- Make a copy of the export. Edit the copy, never the backup.
- Delete the columns you don't want to change. Keep URL handle and Title, which Shopify needs to update products.
- If you keep any variant column, such as SKU or Price, also keep Option1 name and Option1 value as exported.
- Open Skuvera's catalog diff and add the export and your edited file. Both stay in your browser.
- Read the list of changes, and fix anything you didn't mean to change.
- Import the file in Shopify with “Overwrite products with matching handles” selected.
- Open a few products in the admin and check their details, stock and collections.
If it already happened
- Shopify can't undo an import and keeps no import history. Your store's activity log shows recent changes made by an import.
- Put lost values back by importing them again from an export taken before the import.
- Re-enter stock for recreated variants, and re-sync apps that use variant IDs.
- Add products back to their collections in the admin.

Frequently asked questions
- What happens if I don't select overwrite?
- Shopify ignores products whose handle already exists and doesn't change them. In our tests, the import still said it was successful and listed those rows as ignored.
- Can an overwrite import delete products?
- Shopify's documentation says CSV files can't be used to delete products in bulk. In our tests, products that weren't in the file stayed as they were. Variants missing from a product's rows were deleted, though.
- Can a blank cell stop the import?
- Yes. In our tests, a blank price on an existing product made Shopify reject that product. A Status column that was present but blank made Shopify reject the whole file.
- Does the safe import file make an overwrite import fully safe?
- No. It fills back cells that would be cleared, vendors that would become your store name and blank prices, and can merge tags. It can't protect variants that would be recreated or deleted, or products a Collection column would move; those are listed for you to check by hand. Blank inventory cells aren't filled back, because Shopify's behavior there isn't confirmed.
