Shopify says the CSV import was successful, but products didn't update

Your products were most likely skipped because they already exist. When “Overwrite products with matching handles” isn't selected, Shopify ignores products whose URL handle matches an existing product, yet the import can still be reported as successful. Import again with that option selected, after checking what the overwrite will change.

Ce que vous verrez

  • Shopify reported the import as successful, but titles, prices or descriptions in the admin are unchanged.
  • The import summary also mentions products that were ignored because they already exist in your store, with the row number and handle.
  • No duplicate products were created either.

Pourquoi cela arrive

  • Shopify's documentation says that if the overwrite option isn't selected, products that match an existing handle are ignored during the import.
  • Based on our tests on a Shopify development store in November 2026, importing a changed title without overwrite left the product as it was and didn't create a copy with a suffix. The summary first said that all products in the file had been imported successfully, then that one product was ignored because it already existed, naming the row and the handle. (Our store admin was in Chinese, so we can't quote the English wording.)
  • Products are matched by URL handle, not by title. The summary calls it a “name”, but in our test it showed the handle, and changing the title in the file didn't stop the match.
  • Handle matching isn't case-sensitive. In our tests, a file that wrote an existing handle in capital letters matched the original product; with overwrite selected it updated that product instead of creating a new one.

Comment corriger

  1. Read the import confirmation email or summary and look for the products that were ignored. Open one of them in the admin to confirm it didn't change.
  2. If you only meant to add new products, nothing is wrong: existing products were left alone on purpose.
  3. To update the existing products, first export them from the admin and keep the file as a backup. Imports can't be canceled once they start.
  4. Compare that export with your file in Skuvera's catalog diff with overwrite turned on. It shows what the import would actually change, including blank cells that would clear fields and option values that would recreate variants.
  5. Fix what you don't want to change in the file, or with Pro or the 7-day pass, download a safe import file that fills back values Shopify would clear.
  6. Import again and select “Overwrite products with matching handles”. Shopify's import steps note that existing values are replaced for all columns included in the CSV.
  7. Spot-check a few products, including their variants, after the import.

Comment l'éviter

  • Before each import, decide whether you're adding new products or updating existing ones. Updating needs the overwrite option.
  • Don't read “imported successfully” as “every row changed”. Check the summary for ignored products.
  • Set the overwrite switch in the catalog diff to match the import. With it off, the diff marks products with existing handles as skipped, so you can see in advance which ones Shopify will ignore.

Foire aux questions

Will changing the capitalization of a handle create a new product?
No. In our tests, Shopify matched the handle regardless of case and treated it as the existing product.
Is it safe to select overwrite and import the same file again?
Not automatically. With overwrite selected, blank cells can clear fields such as the description or compare-at price, and changed option values recreate variants with new IDs. Compare the file with a store export first.
How is this different from “Ignored line because handle already exists”?
That error is about the file itself: the same handle appears again after another product, so Shopify skips those lines. This guide is about products that already exist in your store and are skipped because overwrite wasn't selected.
